Our Young Writers with Leadership and Business Experience

Our second day of Book Sprinting was another long one but we got through the whole first Module of the new course. Module 1 is a five day face-to-face event for Academy students introducing them to leadership, gender, culture and linking all of this to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The module also takes the time to help participants reflect internally on their own leadership qualities, personality types and team roles. It also covers the very important area of etiquette and deportment.

I thought you might want to find out a little more about our writers. They are terrific. Module 2 is exploring leadership in practice issues so I though we could start with some of our more business minded writers.

Glen Dhliwayo is one of Zimbabwe’s accomplished youth leaders, who has served in various capacities that include being the Student Representative Council (SRC) President when he was studying at Harare Institute of Technology (H.I.T) and is currently serving in the Board the Zimbabwe Youth Council. Glen emerged as a leader from the SRHR Activism front where he has contributed immensely in various capacities for over a decade, first as a peer educator and asserting himself to becoming one of SAfAIDS Youth SRHR Ambassadors. Glen was also the National Coordinating Committee Chairperson of SAYWHAT. He has since leveraged on his experiences and passion in leadership to become a Leadership Coach, Motivational Speaker and Author. Glen has written for many publications including the Herald (Zimbabwe’s largest daily newspaper) and recently self-published his debut book on leadership development titled, ‘Leading from the Place of Influence’. Glen has also spoken at various events, workshops and conferences locally and regionally.  Check out his Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/glendhliwayo

Bolivia Jeremiah is a young woman advocate from Botswana. She possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (2012) from the University of Botswana. Bolivia is a graduate of the SAfAIDS Young Women's Leadership Academy (2013). The training has equipped her with skills such as sexual and reproductive health advocacy and advocacy programming. She has worked with both intergovernmental organisations and local civil society organisations such as UNFPA, UNESCO, Botswana Family Welfare Association and has set in leadership youth platforms such as the UNAIDS Youth Advisory forum,  the ESA ministerial Commitment Technical Working group and the SAfAIDS Technical Working Group. Stronger together!

For us, leadership involvement in various platforms such as the UNAIDS Youth Advisory forum, Zimbabwe Youth Council and SAYWHAT has proven to be more powerful than the intended purpose!  At face value it may appear to be preparing young people for socio-political and health development. However, the reality is that working with and through SAfAIDS we have increased our capacity to contribute tremendously to the economy, through deliberate redirection of our leadership skills to innovative income generating strategies such as establishing independent consultancy firms and private companies in leadership coaching and real estate. "My debut book on leadership development has made impressive sales since it already had a market from my youth development networks " says Glen.
The leadership roles have also been an opportunity for visibility and personal branding therefore cutting down marketing and advertising costs. Being in a Board provided us an opportunity to become apt with preparing and interpreting financial statements and project management plans, skills very necessary for every business leadership.  Bolivia tells us "I have managed to blend well and take up the position of Assistant Manager in a Real Estate company, therefore leading and transforming it into one of Botswana's leading companies."

Our Message?

Young people must have a holistic approach to life and an alertness for opportunities within their passions, translating them to meaningful income generation activities. SAfAIDS youth leadership academy is an opportunity not to be missed!
